The List

Below is the complete list of books on TIME'S All Time 100 best novels list (in the English language and written since 1923). I've highlighted red all those I've read thus far. Ones I've attempted are in green, and ones I've yet to pick up are in blue. The books I've finished all rank among the best books I've ever read, and most of them also rank among my favorites. All of them were stunning. Some of the books on this list I know I'll probably never finish, particularly Flann O'Brien's At-Swim Two Birds. I lasted a mind-boggling 100 pages before I put it down (read: had to return it to the library because it was overdue.)

I do disagree with some of the selections on this list. I think that Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls is far superior to The Sun Also Rises. Maybe its the Hemingway-hater in me, but I truly cannot stand that book with all its machismo and bullfighting and subtle heartbreak. Also, I don't understand why The Lord of The Rings made the list. True, I haven't read the entire thing, but the first three hundred pages only involved hobbits riding through the woods, then stopping, then meeting some elves, then riding some more. I also wonder at the proportion of white male writers to all other demographics. I know that a large percentage of writers actually are male and white, but it seems odd that there are fewer than twenty female authors on this list.

That said, I find the list to supply me with a neverending stream of beautifully written novels that I (mostly) can't seem to put down.
