Finally, the Fabric Market

The South Bund Fabric Market here in Shanghai is a huge, three-story, muti-vendor pot of temptation for me.

It's no secret that I adore clothes and also probably that very few here in Shanghai will fit me, and so to have an entire market dedicated to custom clothing at a ridiculously low price is very, very dangerous.

Here's how the fabric market goes: there are three floors of fabric-stocked stalls, and each stall has a vendor or two. These vendors, depending on how business is going, will solicit your attention (and money). Usually each stall specializes in some kind of fabric and thus makes a specific type of clothing. For example, there are jersey vendors which produce jersey tops and dresses (as shown above), cotton vendors which make shirts, silk vendors which make dresses and pyjamas... you name it, and they probably will or do make it at the fabric market.

A little over a week ago, I wandered in for the first time and fell in love. Yes, there are a lot of foreigners there. Yes, it's a little bit crazy. But where else could I have gotten the custom trench coat that I picked up yesterday, lined with (not very good) silk, for less than $50 US dollars? Nowhere that I know of. I just need to make a little more room in my suitcase for all the goodies I'll be bringing back.
