President Obama finally speaks out about the gay bullying and subsequent suicides that have been occurring in America. I'm glad he broke his silence on the issue. I think that pretty much everyone has been bullied at one point or another, unfortunately. It's a huge, all-encompassing thing that has sadly become a sort of rite of passage for many youths. A while ago, there were some cases of teenage girls taking their own lives due to cyber bullying. It's truly tragic.
I myself was made fun of throughout elementary and middle school. I wouldn't consider it bullying, but I didn't have an easy time of it, either. That infamous middle-school vice presidential campaign speech where the mike was turned up WAY too loud for my opening sentences, which paralleled Martin Luther King Junior's "I have a dream" speech? Yeah, that followed me for years. I had oranges thrown at me and was called horrible names starting from when I was nine, and I don't think I'm alone in my experiences. A lot of people I know experienced far worse. I feel their pain and want to say to anyone experiencing any form of bullying that it DOES GET BETTER.
Maybe not today, or tomorrow, or even in a week or a month or a year. But things do change, do develop and grow, and you grow right along with them. I know life can seem daunting sometimes, especially when faced with difficulty like bullying. But give it time, and ask for help when you need it! There are so many people who love you and want to help. Some great resources are listed on the http://www.whitehouse.gov/itgetsbetter site.
I don't know if anyone reading this needs help or is feeling alone, but know that I have you in my thoughts and am praying for you and for an end to this problem.
